About the Typing Speed Test

Touch typing as a discipline was formalized in 1888 by court stenographer Frank McGurrin, who demonstrated that typing without looking at the keys was dramatically faster than hunt-and-peck. Words-per-minute (WPM) has since become the standard metric for typing speed, and regular practice can push most people well past 60 WPM with solid accuracy.

This browser typing test uses real sentences rather than random words so practice transfers directly to everyday writing. Choose a test duration, type the passage as accurately as you can, and see your live WPM and accuracy as you go. Short, focused sessions on a regular schedule are the most effective way to improve.
